"The finest clothing made is a person's own skin, but, of course, n demands something more than this."
                                            ~Mark Twain

Skin is the part of INTEGUMETARY SYSTEM which consists of body covering ( the skin), hairs, nails, sweat gland/sebaceous gland.

SKIN

• The outer most surface of human anotomy which serves as the medium of interaction with our existing environment.

• It's the largest organ i.e, 20sq feet.

THINNEST SKIN tends to appear around the under eye area and the eyelids (0.5mm thick), whereas, THICKEST SKIN covers the palms and soles (4mm thick).

PURPOSE OF SKIN

PROTECTION from microbes and elements form the outer environment and acts as a shield and prevent any damage to internal organs.

REGULATIONS OF BODY TEMPERATURE through blood vessels and through process of sweating.

SENSATION of touch, cold, pressure, itching, pain, and also triggers reflex action i.e, in case you touch a hot cup you at the very moment withdraw your hands away from the cup.

LAYERS OF SKIN

Bacically skin consists of three layers as mention below:

  • EPIDERMIS the very outer most layer among the three. It is made up of dead cells called KERATINOCYTES ( which is made of tough protein calles keratin) arranged in overlapping layers that impart a tough and waterproof character to the skin's surface. These layers continously grows outwards as the exterior cell and flakes off within a period of about 4 weeks.

      • MELANIN is produced by specialized cells called melanocytes which is skin's natural pigmentation i.e, gives skin its colour and are situated in the epidermis layer of the skin. It also protect the skin from the harmfull ultraviolet ray radiated by the sun.

  • DERMIS the layer below the epidermis is considered as the true skin, containing blood cappillaries, never endings, sebaceous gland, hair follicles and other sensory cells. It is made up of fibrous and elastic tissues (collagen). It's due to presence of collagen that skin acquires it's fexiblity and bounce back anything which hits onto the surface. Dermis also supports the epidermis and provide skin the strength.
  • HYPODERMIS/SUBCUTANEOUS LAYER is the innermost layer of the skin. It is made up of fats and connective tissues. It basically connects the skin to the underlying muscles and bones and also serves as house of larger blood vessels and cells. And acts as insulator to regulate body temperature by providing a passageway for the nerves and blood vessels from dermis to muscles and providing skin with nerves and blood vessels.
